Dunks of 420’s Past
On to my favorite part. Time to reminisce on the countless hits we’ve seen from Nike SB, particularly geared to our stoner’s favorite holiday.
To bring it back to Nike SB’s first celebration in 2004, the “Hemp” Dunk Low was a massive hit. Other Dunks have since tried to ride the wave in later years with a hemp theme but never have gotten the same buzz as the first.
Another eclectic release was the “Cheech and Chong” Dunk High in 2011. With inspiration from the bud smoking duo’s mismatching red headwear, this sneaker had tremendous success and still resells into the mid $1000 range. There is a furry green layer under its white paper-like upper that gets revealed as more wear and tear occurs. I think you can read between the lines. Very clever.
Here’s one of my personal favorites! Just last year on 4/20, Nike dropped the “Dog Walker” Dunk High. Amazing details of doo doo on the milky outsole, multiple hairs and patterns, and a ballistic leash material on the swoosh. Complete with a dog tag and poop bags. Shortly after release these weren’t going for too much over their $110 retail. Since then they’ve now sky rocketed to almost $400. I hope to add these to my collection but should have pulled the trigger on them earlier!
And last but not least, in 2020 we saw the release of the Reverse Skunk Dunks. Now to my knowledge these came out in two styles of packaging and each was kept to 420 pairs, as you can see numbered on the heel counter. Good luck finding a pair under $3,000!
4/20 for 2021
Nike Skateboarding’s annual recognition of the fictional yet globally celebrated 4/20 holiday has been revealed to be an SB Dunk High covered in Hawaiian floral prints. But it’s more than a mere application of a pleasant pattern, but rather a tribute to Maui Wowie aka Maui Waui known for its sweet, tropical flavors.
Nike SB’s take on the specific strain is seen on an all-over pattern that can be torn away to reveal a grassy green suede layer beneath reminiscent of the legendary Skunk Dunks. Hemp-like materials are also used on the tongue as well as the Swoosh logo. Extra touches like a stash pocket, storytelling insoles and special packaging are much appreciated.
Photos below. Pay attention to the on-foot pictures that shoe what’s under the shoe when it’s been distressed.
Conclusion and Resale Anticipation
April 20th, 4/20, whatever you want to call it. it has its importance in many sub-cultures, including sneakers! The Nike Skateboarding division has been cooking up these specialty themed 420 releases for over a decade now and they’ve all had massive success. As mentioned above, last year we were shook with the Reverse Skunk Dunk High. With a couple variations, it was still super limited and has gone wild on the resale market, skyrocketing into the mid four figures. Profit margins should be high for these upcoming Dunks as well.
While we have an official launch page for SNKRS, look out for any local skate shops to be getting these for in-person releases. Instagram might be your best bet to get up to date info. Best believe the Maui Wowie Dunks are damn near going to break the hype meter!
