Nike Air Max 97 & Plus| History

Many sneakers have had their time as the most popular or the most memorable while others, such as the Nike Air Max 97 and Plus are among the category of “Best Sellers”

Christian Tresser & Sean Dowell were responsible for the difficult task of creating the next best running shoe. At the time during the 1990s, Nike running shoes were more than just for running. They were cultural icons and Tresser was told that this sneaker would “Either make or break your career”. No pressure right?

Well it all worked out, The Air Max 97 was a hit and Tresser got to keep his job. Tresser took a lot of inspiration from Tinker Hatfield and used his experience from his time with Reebok.

The sneaker came with exposed Air bags inspired by the Nike Uptempo. The upper meanwhile, had formal wavy patterns and color blocking, giving it a signature look.

The Air Max Plus on the other hand, was an even more of a unique sneaker. Sean Dowell started working for Foot Locker in 1997 and immediately started working on the Air Max Plus. While on a beach in Florida, he took inspiration from the palm trees and lighting while sketching the sneaker.

The end result was an ultra-light-weight Polyurethane sneaker that was an instant hit. Footlocker even conducted market research where the Air Max Plus was place in stores after school hours.

What kids saw as they entered the store mesmerized them. Everyone wanted a pair!

Nike and Foot Locker have always had a very important partnership where both benefited greatly. Foot Locker in 2018 actually started to sell Nike sneakers exclusively including the Air Max Plus and 97.

The campaign was known as “Discover Your Air” and is highly lucrative for both parties. As a result of their ongoing collaborations, Nike and Foot Locker have even opened a joint store recently.

Nike also represents over 70% of sales at Foot Locker stores, making the partnership very ideal for both of them. As Nike’s sales rise, as does Foot Locker’s revenue.

The partnership has seen various exclusive releases by Nike through Foot Locker stores. Some have them have been fairly profitable as well.

To estimate the resale value of the Nike Foot Locker Air Max 97 Remix and Air Max plus Remix, let’s head on over to StockX.

Nike Air Max Plus ‘Greedy’

From StockX

Retail Price: $170

Peak Resell: $380

Release Date: 12/08/2018

Colorway: Black/Tour Yellow-Team Orange-Chile Red

This Air Max Plus came with the Foot Locker exclusive “Home & Away” pack. The pack let you choose a color that matched your favorite team’s home and away kits.

The sneaker itself is very reminiscent of Sean Dowell’s original sketch of the Air Max Plus. It comes with a blue upper with formal and wavy black lines. A black, white and, blue sole and an exposed air unit finishes off the design.

The resale for these is mediocre but they aren’t exactly bricks either. The average price on StockX is $147 but that’s steadily on the rise. Had you sold these at peak resale, profits would’ve been as high as $210.

Nike Air Max 97 Frequency Pack

From StockX

This sneaker in general sports an electrifying yellow and black striped upper. A white, yellow and, black sole with an exposed air unit finishes off the design.

On StockX, it’s pretty much the same resale story here. The average selling price is an unimpressive $140 however, resale prices are on the rise. At peak resale, gross profits are around $230. It appears that the Air Max 97 and plus are making a comeback!

Estimated Resell

Judging by the resale of the aforementioned sneakers, I’d expect small profits from both these sneakers. Nothing too crazy but some lunch money is likely.

To get your money back after applying a standard US tax rate and service fee on StockX. You’d need to sell for at least $200, assuming a $170 retail price. Thus you can expect minor gross profits of $30 if you can sell on websites such as eBay.

Where to Cop

The entire pack is schedule to drop in August while the Nike Foot Locker Air Max 97/Plus Remix releases on August the 8th exclusively on Foot Locker.

Soon after release, you’ll also be able to find them on re-seller websites such as StockX and GOAT.
