Air Jordan 13/Feline-Like Performance

Air Jordan 13 Black Cat COISKI
From coiski.com

The Air Jordan 13 was a special shoe in Michael Jordan’s career. Legendary designer, Tinker Hatfield came up with the idea for the Air Jordan 13 from MJ’s play-style.

He wouldn’t just rush in, try to snatch the ball and score just with his pure athleticism. He would wait, patiently, for the precise moment to pounce. Just as a Panther would do during a hunt.

Interestingly enough, what Hatfield didn’t was MJ’s teammates had already nicknamed him “Black Cat”. Thus, the idea became even more fitting for the Air Jordan 13.

This sneaker has one of the most unique design of any Air Jordan. If you’ve ever owned a pair, I suggest taking a closer look at the sole as it resembles a panther paw. That not a coincidence though, it was done by design.

The Air Jordan 13 released in 1997 near the end of Michael Jordan’s career. It has various colorways and reiterations that continue on to this day. Recent models have however, seen a lot of quality downgrades.

Is Quality Still an Issue?

Prior to 2017, Air Jordan was losing some of its clout due to embarrassing quality downgrades. Particularly with the Air Jordan 13, this was turning into a serious issue.

The greatest basketball player ever was now known to be releasing shabby sneakers. The majority of the problems were with the heel and forefoot that were just way too thin.

Jordan brand soon realized this and have implemented stricter quality control measures. As a result, Air Jordan 13 retroes don’t feel like cheap knockoffs anymore. They feature much thicker heels and over-all better quality leather.

So I would say quality still hasn’t fallen since 2017 and I expect the same for the Air Jordan 13 Lucky Green. Before we estimate its resale value, let’s assess a few similar models to get a better idea.

Jordan 13 Retro Black Island Green

Retail Price: $200

Peak Resell: $345

Release Date: 11/09/2019

Colorway: Black/Metallic Silver-Island Green

With this sneaker, Jordan brand applied a new color to a classic Air Jordan 13 silhouette. Although the colorway has been seen on the Air Jordan 5 before.

This Air Jordan 13 features a synthetic crocodile leather upper with island green heel, forefoot and mid-sole. A signature metallic holograph, metallic jump-man on tongue and a black mid-sole finishes off the design.

Coming to the resale, I’d say it’s doing below average. The trade range is between $144-$146 with the average price being $142. On average, they’ve not been very profitable.

At peak resale however, profits are around $145 before tax and service fee. The low resale is perhaps that it’s not a retro of an OG colorway.

Air Jordan 13 Retro Hyper Royal Black

Retail Price: $190

Peak Resell: $439

Release Date: 03/03/2018

Colorway: White/Hyper-Royal-Black

This is one of the OG colorways the Air Jordan 13 released in with slight tweaks. First dropping back in 1998, These sneakers feature a white, black and a royal blue color instead of red.

This is considered to be one of the best pure basketball sneakers out there. This colorway in particular remained unreleased for about 20 years. Only exclusive to Michael Jordan and his family and friends.

The resale is pretty average however, there is some money to be made. According to StockX, the trade range is between $250-$308 with the average price being $223. The resale has seen a sudden boost since “The Last Dance” documentary” and its resale is expected to rise.

At peak resale, profits are around $250 before tax and resale.

Air Jordan 13 Retro Flint (2020)

Jordan 13 Retro Flint 2020
stockx.com

Retail Price: $190

Peak Resell: $673

Release Date: 05/30/2020

Colorway: Navy/Flint Grey-White

This sneaker released earlier this month in full family sizing. The color tone stays true to the original, even mimicking the 3M reflective side panels. Luckily, these have seen improved quality over the 2010 Retro Flint with evidently better build quality.

The resale for these sneakers are also pretty lucrative. Trade range according to StockX is currently around $231-$259 with the average price being $266. That’s an average profit of $76 before tax and service fee.

At peak resale, profits are around $483 before tax and service fees. That’s a good indication as I expect similar profits for the Air Jordan 13 Lucky Green.

Retail Price: $190

Estimated Resell: $250

Release Date: 09/26/2020

Colorway: White/Black-Lucky Green

The Air Jordan 13 Lucky green is very reminiscent of the Player Edition known as AJ 13 “Three-Point Record”.

This too features a white leather upper along with bright green overlay on the mid-foot, heel and, mid-sole that’s sure to catch some eyes. Green hits are also around along the collar.

Matching white laces and a green Jump-Man logo further embellishes the design. The typical hologram, black mid-sole mixes up the otherwise all-green and white color tone. A green, white and black out-sole finishes off the design.

Estimated Resell

Judging from the resale of the Air Jordan 13 Flint, I expect resale to be similar but probably a bit lower. Currently, information on StockX is not available.

However, on GOAT you can find one for around $440. GOAT is often more expensive and prices are sure to drop closer to release date. As seen with other sneakers, constant delays often reduce hype for these sneakers which ultimately brings down resale value.

To get your money back, you’ll need to sell for at least $227 after a standard US tax rate and service fee. Thus by using my estimated resale value, you’re looking at pure profits of around $40 on average.

Where to Cop

The Air Jordan 13 Lucky Green drops on the 26th of September for a price of $190. You can expect them at select Jordan retailers and Nike.com.

These are expected to sell out so if you fail to cop, you can get them from re-seller websites such as GOAT.
