Conventional Sneaker Production| Just Do It Different?

A lot of you might not know this but sneakers cause a lot of harm to the environment.

According to a report by BBC, sneakers washing ashore is common sight to behold. Not just one or two but piles of sneakers collecting on shores around the world is beginning to be a problem.

The main culprit behind this plastic invasion is the ambition of companies to make the absolute best. That means ignoring any negative externality with only one objective in mind.

That’s how the Nike Air Max came to be with its revolutionary Air unit. The unit was made entirely of plastic and improved performance for basketball more than ever before.

Let’s not however, blame legendary designer, Tinker Hatfield for it. At the time of creating the sneaker, there wasn’t much awareness of the global impact that plastic had on the environment.

In 2019 alone, over 20 Billion shoes have been sold and even more were manufactured. Sadly, a lot of them end up in oceans and seas around the world. Since plastic isn’t biodegradable, it’s becoming a serious threat to wildlife.

Recently, Nike has come up with a better way to produce their sneakers. It may just change how sneakers are made, forever.

Nike| FlyKnit & Space Hippie

Nike Sustainability Flyease Nike News
From Nike News.com

Nike has been leading the charge of producing eco-friendly sneakers for a while now. Although they have been over taken by Adidas & Parley in recent years, Nike has never been far behind.

In 2013 after revealing their sustainable business performance statistics, it showed a lot of progress. They reduced carbon emissions by 3 percent and reduced the number of factories by 14 percent.

This however, wasn’t good enough to reduce the negative externalities like plastic production to an ideal rate.

FlyKnit technology was another milestone in reaching eco-friendly development goals. It used far fewer resources which left a significantly smaller carbon foot print.

Their latest Space Hippie collection however is in my opinion, revolutionary. A sports-wear giant creating sneakers almost entirely of recycled materials sets a great example for others to follow.

Not only are sneakers from the pack such as the ‘Nike Space Hippie 03’ super hyped but they’re also very profitable. Let’s take a look over at StockX and see how they’re doing on the resale market.

Assessing them might help us estimate the resale value for the Nike Space Hippie Grey Volt collection.

Nike Space Hippie 01 Vast Grey Hyper Crimson

From StockX

Retail Price: $130

Peak Resell: $750

Release Date: 07/03/2020

Colorway: Vast Grey/Hyper Crimson

The Nike Space Hippie 01 price was the lowest out of the collection at $130. However, the profit margins are possibly the highest.

The silhouette is of a pretty average low cut running sneaker. It has a grey upper with a dotted crimson “Swoosh”. A speckled white sole made of crater foam finishes off the design.

Getting your hands on them for retail prices was a very difficult task. They sold out as soon as they released thus also driving up resale prices because of the demand.

The average re-selling price is $270 which means on average, they’re being sold at a profit of $140 per pair. At peak resale prices, profit is around $620.

Retail Price: $150

Peak Resell: $450

Release Date: 07/03/2020

Colorway: Vast Grey/Hyper Crimson

The Nike Space Hippie Hyper Crimson 02 was perhaps the least hyped among the trio. That however, doesn’t mean these aren’t profitable either.

It comes in a similar ‘Vast Grey’ upper with a crimson “Swoosh”. It comes in a more elevated structure to the 01 and has a different lacing system. A speckled white sole made out of a similar crater foam material finishes off the design.

On StockX, the average price is $246 which would mean an average gross profit of $96. At peak resale, profits are as high as $300 which is pretty decent resale overall.

Retail Price: $180

Peak Resell: $650

Release Date: 07/03/2020

Colorway: Vast Grey/Hyper Crimson

This one is basically a high-top version of the Space Hippie Hyper Crimson 01. It also comes with a pull tab and a heel release as an alternate lacing system.

The 03 is quite limited because of the Flyease technology it uses which is also pretty limited. That ultimately contributes to higher re-sale prices as well. These were almost impossible to grab for retail prices.

The average price is a respectable $360 which means re-sellers are earning gross profits of over $180. That’s double the return!

The first time was so nice, they had to do it twice!

This is Nike’s second space hippie pack drop in 1 month. The last pack as mentioned above, released on the 3rd of July. The Nike Space Hippie Grey Volt is pretty much identical with only a few minor tweaks.

The unique selling point of this sneaker remains the same, it’s made almost entirely out of recycled materials. That is impressive to say the least.

Each sneaker is constructed from a yarn and materials made out of recycled plastic. Each sneaker also has a crater foam mid-sole which is a fusion of Nike’s ZoomX foam and NikeGrind rubber.

The Nike Space Hippie Grey Volt 01 comes in a typical low top ‘Running Shoe’ silhouette. The only difference seems to be the Volt “Swoosh” instead of the crimson one.

The 02 ditches the traditional lacing system for webbed black stitching instead. It also comes with a Volt “Swoosh” instead of crimson.

The 03 is perhaps the most unique out of the trio. It’s a high top variant of the 01 with a Flyease lacing system. This system is what makes the sneaker more limited than the rest. There’s also a marbled plastic anchor on the mid-foot and a “Swoosh” above the toe box.

Nike Space Hippie Grey Volt Resell Estimation

I’m going to say right off the bat that I expect decent profits from this collection. As we’ve seen before, people are really into the “Move to Zero” initiative. Either that or they just love the way these sneakers look and feel. Either way, these kicks are fire!

To get your money back after using a standard US tax rate and service fee. You’ll need to sell the 01, 02 & 03 for $155, $180 & $215 respectively.

By using my estimated resell prices, that’s an average profit of $85 for 01, $40 for 02 and $135 for 03 per pair. A pretty profitable bunch!

As you can, re-sellers are asking for pretty high prices as they’re expecting high profits. Luckily for them, the highest bids are not too far off.

Where to Cop

The Trio releases on the 16th of July at select Nike retailers and the Nike SNKRS App. The last Space Hippie sneakers disappeared as soon as they went on sale.

I suggest using a bot as copping one is highly unlikely if you’re going to do it the manual way.

You can get them today at re-seller websites such as StockX.
