New Balance Recency Bias and Return of 2002

The New Balance hype train has certainly taken off, especially over the last year or so with all the wildly successful collabs as well as the classic, inline options being available. With partnerships like Aime Leon More, Bodega, Kith, Jjjjound, and Stray Rats, NB is thriving. Not to mention getting more involved with basketball and giving Kawhi Leonard his first signature sneaker. Safe to say the brand is doing well and gaining more marketshare in hyped sneakers.

On the other hand, the New Balance 2002 originally dropped in 2010, where it was at the height of performance running footwear. A decade later, the silhouette has returned with a few updates. See more details here – New Balance 2002R Grey and Black.

The Looks and Inspiration

Bembury, who’s currently the Vice President of Sneakers and Men’s Footwear at Versace, will soon release his own iteration of the New Balance 2002, marking his first-ever collab with the brand.

The New Balance 2002 model was introduced in 2010 and is best known for its use of the brand’s N-ERGY cushioning in the midsole. The collab’s most striking design elements are found on the upper, featuring a blend of suede, mesh, and leather while his name is seen on the tongue. Upon a closer examination, acorn insole will bless your feet, Based on the images, Bembury’s “Peace Be the Journey” makeup combines shades of orange, yellow, maroon, and light blue.

“The collaboration was inspired by my recent attraction and time spent in nature. Since moving to the West Coast, I’ve really got to take advantage of all the National Parks in close proximity — Bryce Canyon, Zion National Park, Antelope Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Yosemite Park.”

Here’s the official images below. Check them out and let us know if they’re a pair you’d like to see in your rotation. Peep the on foot photo provided by none other than musician and sneaker nut, John Mayer.

Conclusion and Resale Anticipation

The upcoming collaboration with New Balance is sure to be a hit on the reselling market. I’ll tell you why: it has a meaningful story from a low-key, yet intriguing artist, it’s a classic silhouette that’s being brought back, and most importantly – the limited stock numbers. All these components mixed with facets like an objectively fire color way and premium materials make for a fantastic shoe.

While there doesn’t seem to be many public sales at the moment, folks are already putting bids in and willing to pay $400 to $500 right now. And in their head, those high prices could still see a good return in the long run. Tough to tell exactly where these will land but we know there will be a sizable margin from the retail price.
